White spot (Ichthyophthiriasis Multifiliis)

White Spot is a very common and potentially fatal parasite that most fish keepers will encounter at some time. In its early stages White Spot needs to be diagnosed under a microscope, however if left untreated it is visible to the naked eye as the fish becomes covered in small white spots resembling grains of salt. Once it has gained the upper hand white spot is capable of quickly effecting all species of fish and mortalities can be rapid.
White Spot has a complex yet fascinating life cycle that offers limited opportunities to eradicate it of its total life cycle, hence treatment can be quite complicated. To be effective the chemical treatment needs to attack the white spot when it falls from the fish to the pond bottom or when it is in it's free swimming stage. It is likely treatment will need to be carried out over a prolonged period. Understanding the life cycle of white spot is key to treating effectively.
